    Getting to Know: Dean Robinson

    1) Name: Dean Robinson

    2) Age: 21

    3) What do you do when you are not at the box?

This year I’ll be starting my 3rd year of my Bcom Accounting Degree, so lectures and studying takes up the majority of my time. I also have a girlfriend who likes to see my face quite often. Otherwise I’m busy doing normal student life stuff with good mates.

    4) How did you start CrossFit and how long have you been doing it?

Haha Jess (girlfriend) lives next door to the box and used to hear coach Nico shouting (motivationally!) at the 5AM and 6AM classes. I was always interested in CrossFit so I went to sign up! I started in March 2014

    5) What is your biggest achievement since starting CrossFit?

Interning at the box is definitely up there, hopefully it can be trumped in a few weeks if I can pass the Level 1.

    6) What is your best and worst movement or WOD?

Favourite movement is a standing up a heavy squat snatch, worst is box jumps by faaaaaar

    7) Most memorable moment at CFB?

The first moment that comes to mind was during 2015 Fitness League. Paul van der Merwe was finishing his 100 or 150 Kettlebell swings and all his teammates as well as us supporters and the opposition team were counting him down. The atmosphere during those last 10 reps was intense!

    8) Who inspires you at the box and why?

My sister, because it’s quite embarrassing if she beats me haha!

I would say all the coaches at the box, just by the way they interact with people and how the have their own unique ways of creating such a positive environment. They also know when is the right time to be serious, and the right time to play handball in the middle of the gym.

    9) Any words of wisdom to your fellow CFBers or newbies?

Remember we all have our good and bad days, so try not to beat yourself up too much just because you didn’t perform the way you wanted to or because someone put a better score than you on the whiteboard.

    Getting to Know: Coach Ernie

    1) Name: Ernst Gideon Malherbe VII

    2) Age: 25

    3) What do you do when you are not at the box?

I am at Tukkies and I am in my second year of Law after having recently graduated with a BA in English and Psychology. I also work at Waterkloof House Preparatory School (WHPS) as a sports coach. If I’m not coaching or studying, I like to make time for some tennis, running and swimming.

    4) How did you start CrossFit and how long have you been doing it?

I had heard about CrossFit through a friend so at the end of 2012. I started “CrossFitting” at Virgin Active by using YouTube and the CrossFit main site. I knew nothing about scaling or moving properly. I did Fran in 14:35 RX, CrossFit was a lot harder in a globo gym without a coach or the know-how.

    5) What is your biggest achievement since starting CrossFit?

Finishing in the top 50 of the individual, elite division of Last Man Standing in 2015. It answered a lot of my questions about my athletic capabilities and marked the end of a long term goal. Who am I kidding? Landing a tail-whip on the Razor scooter is by far my biggest achievement!!!

    6) What is your best and worst movement or WOD?

My ultimate WOD would consist of chest-to-bar pull ups, handstand push ups, toes-to-bar, rowing and hang power cleans. My ultimate fear would be a WOD with heavy deadlifts, pistols, burpees and double unders.

    7) Most memorable moment at CFB?

The moments that really stand out for me are those where peoples’ faces light up when they accomplish something that they previously thought impossible or put in an effort that they never knew they had in them.

    8) Who inspires you at the box and why?

The members who find it extremely difficult in the beginning but who stick it out and reap the rewards.

    9) Any words of wisdom for your fellow CFBers or newbies?

Don’t quit your day job – going to the CrossFit Games is like going to the Olympics. Don’t become a white board warrior, compete against yourself only. Stick to the movement standards. Don’t eat fruit or fibre on double under or box jump day.

All the people that start at the gym who are not in shape, but keep coming back and never miss a session and eventually they change for the better #word #truth

    9) Any words of wisdom to your fellow CFBers or newbies?

Learn how to move well, then fast, and then heavy. It’s not easy but it is how we become better #havefun  oh and DON’T EVER COME LATE! #youknowwhoyouare
