Getting to Know: Coach Ernie

1) Name: Ernst Gideon Malherbe VII

2) Age: 25

3) What do you do when you are not at the box?

I am at Tukkies and I am in my second year of Law after having recently graduated with a BA in English and Psychology. I also work at Waterkloof House Preparatory School (WHPS) as a sports coach. If I’m not coaching or studying, I like to make time for some tennis, running and swimming.

4) How did you start CrossFit and how long have you been doing it?

I had heard about CrossFit through a friend so at the end of 2012. I started “CrossFitting” at Virgin Active by using YouTube and the CrossFit main site. I knew nothing about scaling or moving properly. I did Fran in 14:35 RX, CrossFit was a lot harder in a globo gym without a coach or the know-how.

5) What is your biggest achievement since starting CrossFit?

Finishing in the top 50 of the individual, elite division of Last Man Standing in 2015. It answered a lot of my questions about my athletic capabilities and marked the end of a long term goal. Who am I kidding? Landing a tail-whip on the Razor scooter is by far my biggest achievement!!!

6) What is your best and worst movement or WOD?

My ultimate WOD would consist of chest-to-bar pull ups, handstand push ups, toes-to-bar, rowing and hang power cleans. My ultimate fear would be a WOD with heavy deadlifts, pistols, burpees and double unders.

7) Most memorable moment at CFB?

The moments that really stand out for me are those where peoples’ faces light up when they accomplish something that they previously thought impossible or put in an effort that they never knew they had in them.

8) Who inspires you at the box and why?

The members who find it extremely difficult in the beginning but who stick it out and reap the rewards.

9) Any words of wisdom for your fellow CFBers or newbies?

Don’t quit your day job – going to the CrossFit Games is like going to the Olympics. Don’t become a white board warrior, compete against yourself only. Stick to the movement standards. Don’t eat fruit or fibre on double under or box jump day.
