Getting to Know: Elmarie Human

1) Name: Elmarie Human

2) Age: 23

3) What do you do when you are not at the box?

I’m studying BCom Financial Management and for extra money, promote wine in-store and at wine festivals.

4) How did you start CrossFit and how long have you been doing it?

My brother told me I should be at CrossFit Brooklyn. I started the On-Ramp in November 2014 and his words were “it’s chilled, you’ll just talk about CrossFit”. I nearly died that day (keeping in mind I hadn’t exercised in 3 years) but I fell in love and when we did the same WOD, I could see an improvement in only a weeks time.

5) What is your biggest achievement since starting CrossFit?

My biggest achievement would be my weight loss, being more fit and living a healthier life style.

6) What is your best and worst movement or WOD?

Best WOD would be ‘Isabel’. It was my first benchmark workout I did RX and finished in the time cap.

Worst WOD would be ‘Karen’ it was my first week off on-ramp we did ‘Karen’ and to make things worse, we had to do 3 burpees EMOM and then you could go on with the wall balls

7) Most memorable moment at CFB?

The most memorable moment would be when I get my first pull-up! No, I would say it was a few months back when we did back squats for strength and technique. I had 67kg on my back as I got up from my squat Ludwig said: “Do you still remember how you struggled with an empty bar on your back?” It only kicked in afterwards when I realized I’m squatting more than my body weight in only 6 months of doing CrossFit!

 8) Who inspires you at the box and why?

Firstly Nyakwezi – she was the first lovely CrossFitter I met. I was still busy with On-Ramp and she walked up to me with the friendliest face and as we talked, she made me realise the struggle of running is real but I wasn’t alone. Nyakwezi has the best heart and she’ll always make you feel better.

Secondly Karien Venter – when we were busy with a WOD, she walked up to me as I was finishing up with burpees. She motivated me to get up from each burpee. It just inspires me how she motivates herself and always wants the best for others.

Keeping the best for last: Tannie Christa, just by looking at her is already a big motivation, my goal is to be as fit and good looking as her when I reach her age.

9) Any words of wisdom to your fellow CFBers or newbies?

Focus on the technique of every movement, strength will come with time.
